A Rocking Chair's Journey
Now, let's get real - I've had my fair share of oopsie-daisies while getting the hang of things. From mixing up products to finding my groove, I've been there, done that. So, if you're into jazzing up furniture, stick around! This blog might just save your DIY soul!
Here's the Lowdown: THE ABCs
When you're sprucing up your furniture, make a call - water-based or oil-based? DO match water-based stain with a water-based seal. Think Minwax water-based tintable stain cozying up to Minwax polyacrylic water-based seal. DO pair oil-based stain with an oil-based seal. Picture Minwax oil-based stain having a sweet rendezvous with an oil-based seal. And here's a big NO-NO: DON'T mix water-based with oil-based stain and seal. Trust me, it's a recipe for disaster! Steer clear of slapping polyurethane seal on painted surfaces. That's a one-way ticket to a yellowing disaster! Pro tip: Upgrade to a sturdy enamel for painted finishes. (Yep, guilty as charged on this one, folks! Lesson learned the hard way. Don't anger the furniture deities!) Remember, prepping like a pro is KEY! Bid adieu to dust, grime, stains, and whatnot before diving into the refinishing adventure. Once the wood is squeaky clean or the surface is all prepped, you're good to go! Rule of thumb: DON'T paint over already painted furniture. It might sound controversial, but trust me on this. Chemical chaos could be lurking, leading to peeling, bubbling, and whatnot. Always prep like your furniture's life depends on it! Use your best judgment and factor in the furniture's condition.
Story-time,
So, picture this - a lovely couple strolling into my shop last year with a lime green rocking chair craving a fiery red makeover. I roll up my sleeves, start stripping the layers of paint, only to unveil a paint saga of epic proportions - layers upon layers of paint, varnish, and polyurethane. It was a marathon of stripping and sanding, costing me an arm and a leg in materials. But hey, the end result? Pure magic! I've even got a sneak peek video of the stripping process - and no, not the scandalous kind (chuckle, wink). Oh, and of course, a snapshot of the stunning final product!
